5 Key Trends Shaping Global Trade Compliance Tech

At KYG Trade, we’ve identified five major — but conflicting — trends shaping the global trade compliance software market.

1. Moving From Pilot to Production

The first trend concerns the maturity of AI and how trade compliance professionals use it. Organizations are moving from pilot AI projects to production workflows, as executive teams expect greater efficiency and risk reduction in an increasingly complex trade environment. Escalating tariffs, trade remedies, sanctions, and export controls are driving demand and adoption of more technically agile and continuously updated compliance platforms. The challenge is no longer proving that AI can help, but rather implementing effective AI solutions.

2. Governance and Complexity

Second, governance, security, and compliance requirements are becoming as important as technology capabilities. Many enterprises struggle to align the competing priorities of this trend with the first one.

IT, legal, and security teams are increasing scrutiny of AI solutions. But they often underestimate the complexity of building and maintaining internal AI tools. The conflicting priorities and underestimation of sophistication and maintenance result in a virtual no man’s land of adoption and implementation.

Adoption timelines can extend for one to two years. Successful organizations will align trade, IT, legal, procurement, and executive leadership around a common AI strategy.

3. Unified Platforms over Point Solutions

Third, organizations are realizing that the myriad of AI-enabled point solutions they adopt or develop without integration are not scalable. Platforms that unify import, export, tariff optimization, and supply chain traceability are winning out in organizations that take a long view of the automation opportunity.

Workflows, collaboration tools, integration with ERPs and PLMs, global capabilities, and highly-configurable technologies are as important to these enterprises as the accuracy of the classification or qualification.

4. Human + AI Hybrid Work

The fourth trend involves a recognition: AI workflows have actually highlighted the importance of human expertise. The question around trade compliance automation has evolved from “Can AI do this?” to “What’s the optimal division of labor between humans and AI?”

Experienced trade compliance professionals are needed now more than ever. The difference is that the roles have changed.

5. The Domain Expertise Mandate

The last trend is a growing rediscovery of something that was always true. If trade compliance software providers don’t have deep domain expertise, then they can’t adequately inform development and customer success. Clients expect knowledgeable trade compliance teams on the vendor side in order to perceive value and to fully adopt and engage with the technology.
