The Application of AI in Trade Compliance
We already have proof of AI’s capabilities in trade. For example, KYG Trade’s AI-assistant, Kay, passed the October 2025 U.S. Customs Brokers License Exam. And now, AI use might be expected, as it is in other sectors. Indeed, not using AI may be a dereliction of reasonable care.
Yet, Todd R. Smith describes how H350722 seems to push back against AI. Online platforms are fine to use, as long as they’re not using AI-generated HS classifications AND actively preparing and filing a customs entry. Still, the ruling has had a sobering effect on some third-party platforms using AI in trade.
